Roofers in Windsor
Roofing work across Windsor and the surrounding villages
Windsor is one of the more demanding towns in Berkshire to roof well, and that is largely down to its history. The streets closest to the Castle and along Peascod Street and Sheet Street sit inside conservation areas, and a good number of the properties on them are listed. That means natural slate rather than fibre cement, clay plain tile rather than concrete, and lead detailing formed the traditional way rather than substituted for a modern membrane. We work in those materials as a matter of course, and we will flag before we quote if your property is likely to need consent for the work you have in mind.
Move a little further out and the building stock changes. Clewer and Dedworth are largely Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas, many with slate roofs and hand-formed lead valleys that are now well over a century old. Old Windsor and Datchet sit close to the river, and riverside damp is a genuine, recurring issue there, moisture holds in masonry and roof timbers for longer than it does further from the water, and we see delamination and frost damage on slate that would last decades on a drier site. Eton, across the bridge, carries its own mix of period cottages and larger listed buildings, many with the same lead and slate detailing we specialise in.
Windsor's newer housing, out towards the Imperial Road area and the edges of Dedworth, is mostly post-war and later, built with concrete interlocking tiles and mortar-bedded ridges. It is more straightforward to repair than the town-centre period stock, but it still needs doing properly, a mortar-bedded ridge that has blown is a common call-out here, as is a cracked hip tile after a windy night.
Because we are based just up the road in Maidenhead, Windsor is well within our regular working area rather than somewhere we occasionally travel to. That means we know the parking restrictions around the Castle and the town centre, the access constraints on the narrower Georgian and Victorian terraces, and the specific councils' expectations for materials on listed and conservation-area work, before we even arrive to look at your roof.
We work Monday to Saturday, 7am to 10pm, and emergency repairs are available for storm damage and active leaks. If your roof is letting water in now, call us and say so; we will tell you honestly what we can do and when.

Why Windsor homeowners call Heritage Roof & Lead Co.
A short drive from our Maidenhead base
We are registered at 151 Larchfield Road, Maidenhead, SL6 2SJ, close enough to Windsor that access and scheduling are never the bottleneck.
Genuine period and listed roofing experience
Thomas George leads a team of six to eight tradespeople, with two or three on site for a typical job, working in natural slate, clay tile and sand-cast lead, the materials Windsor's older streets actually need.
Fixed prices, never a day rate
Every Windsor job is quoted at a fixed price in writing before we start, whether it is a lead valley on a listed cottage or a re-roof on a 1960s semi.
Photographic evidence with every inspection
You get a photographic report of what we found, so you can see the condition of the roof and make a decision on evidence rather than take our word for it.
Insured and guaranteed
£2 million public liability insurance, and a 10-year workmanship guarantee on re-roofs, new roofs and major works. Smaller repairs are not covered unless we confirm that in writing.
Straight answers on timing and materials
We will not promise an arrival window we cannot keep, and we will tell you plainly if a repair is likely to need listed building consent before you commit to anything.
Local roofing problems
What goes wrong on Windsor roofs, and why
Windsor's roofing problems follow the town's history as closely as its architecture does. Here is what we see repeatedly across Windsor, Eton, Clewer, Dedworth, Old Windsor and Datchet.
Century-old lead on listed and conservation-area roofs
The streets nearest the Castle and along Peascod Street and Sheet Street carry roofs where the lead valleys, chimney flashings and parapet gutters were hand-formed generations ago. After decades of thermal movement those details split along their folds and at their fixings, and on a listed building the temptation to patch rather than replace is strong because of the consent process.
Patching with mastic or flashing tape traps water against timber that is already old and often already partly decayed. We strip failed lead back to sound coursing and re-form it in sand-cast lead with correct welts and expansion allowance, and we will tell you in advance whether the work is likely to need listed building consent.
Riverside damp in Old Windsor and Datchet
Properties close to the Thames in Old Windsor and Datchet sit in persistently damp air for much of the year. That moisture holds against slate and tile roof surfaces for longer than it would further from the river, encouraging moss and algae growth that traps water and accelerates frost damage and delamination.
We see slates here failing years earlier than an equivalent roof on a drier, more exposed site would. Regular cleaning and maintenance, and prompt attention to slipped or cracked slates before winter frosts get into them, is genuinely the cheapest way to protect a riverside roof.
Blown mortar on Dedworth and Clewer ridges
A large share of the Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Clewer and Dedworth, and the later housing beyond them, have ridge and hip tiles bedded in sand-and-cement mortar. That mortar has a working life, and across these streets we regularly find beds cracked, hollow, or missing outright.
Mortar fragments in the gutter or a visibly shifted ridge tile are the usual first sign, followed by damp appearing high in a bedroom ceiling. Left unaddressed, wind gets under the loose tile, lifts it, and turns a maintenance job into a leak and a falling-tile hazard over a footpath below.
Slate matching on period terraces and villas
Windsor's Victorian and Edwardian stock is largely natural slate, and matching new slate to old, in size, colour and thickness, is a skill in itself, particularly where a conservation officer expects a consistent finish across a terrace.
We hand-sort slate to match existing coursing wherever possible, and where full re-slating is the honest answer rather than patch repairs, we say so and explain why, backed by photographs of the roof's actual condition.
Extensions and flat roofs behind period frontages
Many Windsor properties, including period ones near the town centre, have had rear extensions added over the decades, often with flat roof sections tucked behind the original pitched roof. The junction between old and new is where leaks usually start: under-lapped flashings, felt turned up too short behind render, or a flat deck laid without proper falls.
Where a flat roof has reached the end of its life we take it back to sound structure rather than overlay a tired deck, and detail the upstands and abutments correctly against the original roof.
Storm damage on exposed and open sites
Open aspects around Old Windsor, Datchet and the edges of Dedworth take a harder hit from the storms that cross southern England each winter, with verges stripped, ridges lifted and flat roof coverings peeled back.
After a storm the priority is making the roof watertight and recording the damage properly. Our photographic reports are written so you can pass them to an insurer if you need to, without us making any claim about what a policy will or will not cover.

Windsor questions
Answers for Windsor homeowners
Anything not covered here, call 07711 933023 and ask. Mon–Sat, 7am–10pm.
Do you serve Windsor?
Yes. We work throughout Windsor, Eton, Clewer, Dedworth, Old Windsor and Datchet, a short drive from our base at 151 Larchfield Road, Maidenhead, SL6 2SJ.
How quickly can you get to a Windsor property?
We are based a short drive away in Maidenhead, so travel is rarely the limiting factor. Rather than promise a response time we cannot guarantee, call us and we will give you a straight answer on when we can attend, including for storm damage and active leaks.
What does roofing work cost in Windsor?
Every job is quoted at a fixed price after inspection, because cost depends on access, materials, pitch and the extent of the work. We do not work on day rates. Quotes and inspections are free in most cases; where a roof needs specialist access just to inspect safely, we will explain that before we attend.
Do you handle emergency roof repairs in Windsor?
Yes, emergency repairs are available for storm damage and leaks. Call us and tell us what is happening; we will give you honest guidance on limiting damage and on timing.
Can you work on a listed building in Windsor?
Yes, this is part of our regular work. We specialise in period and listed roofs using natural slate, clay tile, hand-made tiles and sand-cast lead, and we will tell you in advance if your project is likely to need listed building consent.
Will you use the right materials for a conservation area?
Yes. In Windsor's conservation areas we use natural slate, clay tile and traditional lead detailing rather than modern substitutes, and we match coursing and colour as closely as the existing roof allows.
Are you insured to work in Windsor?
Yes. We carry £2 million public liability insurance.
What guarantee do I get on a re-roof in Windsor?
Re-roofs, new roofs and major works carry a 10-year workmanship guarantee. Smaller repairs are not covered by that guarantee unless we confirm otherwise in writing for your job.
How are payments structured on larger Windsor projects?
Smaller repairs and maintenance are paid on completion. Projects running beyond five days are staged, with an initial deposit and further payments at agreed milestones through to completion.
Do riverside properties in Windsor need different roofing treatment?
Often, yes. Properties in Old Windsor and Datchet close to the Thames sit in persistently damp air, which shortens the life of slate and tile and encourages moss growth. We factor that into our recommendations and maintenance advice for riverside roofs.
