Many Chiltern roofs were built steep for good reason: to shed heavy rain fast off a hillside. That steepness also means individual slates and tiles take a real beating from wind, and a single displaced piece near the ridge can let water travel a long way down the underlay before it shows as a stain inside.

We see this most on exposed roofs above High Wycombe and Amersham, where the land climbs quickly and the wind has a clear run at the roof. Diagnosing the actual entry point on a steep pitch usually means getting eyes and a camera onto the roof itself rather than guessing from the ground.

Buckinghamshire's woodland is part of its character, but mature trees around Beaconsfield, Gerrards Cross and the smaller Chiltern villages keep roof surfaces shaded and damp for much of the year. Moss builds up in the shelter of ridges and valleys, holds water against the tile or slate, and accelerates frost damage in winter.

The same trees drop leaf litter that blocks valleys and gutters, particularly on the complex hipped and gabled roofs common on the county's larger detached houses. Left unmanaged, that build-up backs water up under the lowest courses and into the roof structure itself.

Amersham Old Town, parts of Chesham and the smaller Chiltern villages hold a real concentration of listed and vernacular buildings: flint and brick cottages, timber-framed structures, and roofs finished in hand-made clay tile or natural slate with traditional lead valleys and flashings.

These roofs demand materials and detailing that match what was there originally, and often need listed building consent before any significant work. We flag this before quoting, and we source natural slate and clay or hand-made tile rather than reaching for a modern substitute that would look wrong and, in many cases, would not be permitted.

Marlow's position on the Thames brings persistent humidity to roofs close to the river, in much the same way it does in Maidenhead. That damp air keeps slates and tiles wetter for longer, encourages algae growth, and accelerates the breakdown of old mortar bedding on ridges and hips.

Riverside properties in Marlow also tend to have restricted rear or side access, which affects how a roof can be scaffolded safely, something we account for when we quote rather than discovering on the day.

The larger detached houses common in Beaconsfield and Gerrards Cross often carry roofs with multiple valleys, hips, dormers and chimney stacks, more junctions than a simple roof, and more places for a flashing or valley lining to fail.

When one of these roofs leaks, the water rarely shows up directly under the fault. We trace leaks methodically rather than replacing the nearest visible defect and hoping, because on a complex roof that guesswork gets expensive fast.

The Chiltern escarpment and the more open plots around High Wycombe and Aylesbury Vale take significant wind loading during winter storms, and it is common to see stripped verges, lifted ridge tiles and torn flashings after a bad night of weather.
